48 Hours in Savannah: What to Do, See, and Eat

My family and I have talked about traveling to Savannah for quite awhile now, so I am so happy we finally took the trip this past weekend for Labor Day! We stayed at the Holiday Inn Express in the historic district, which is within walking distance of almost all the places I will be mentioning today. The whole city is full of beautiful scenery, loads of history, and so many fun places to shop and eat.

WHAT TO DO // Hearse Ghost Tour - For those of you who don't know, Savannah is said to be one of the most haunted cities in the United States. There are so many ghost tours to choose from- horse carriage, trolley, Hearse, you name it! I read that the Hearse tours were the best, so that's what we went with. It started with our guide picking us up from our hotel at around 11 PM to explore the city and teach us about the ghost related history for the next hour or so. She took us all throughout the historic district, and it ended up being one of the best tours I've ever been on. It was the perfect combination of historical and spooky.

Wormsloe Historic Site - The most Instagram-worthy spot we came across in Savannah was by far this former plantation. The breathtaking entrance boasts over 400 live oak trees, making the perfect photo-op. Not only is it a sight to see, but there's so much history to be learned here as well. It's about 20 minutes outside of the historic district, but more than worth the drive.

WHAT TO SEE // River Street - This was actually our very first stop in Savannah. It's full of restaurants and souvenir shops, and the river is nice to walk along while checking out the boats. They also have a Visitors Center full of maps of not only River Street, but the whole city of Savannah as well. Hidden Gem: Echo Square! It's in the middle of the street on the side of the river. You stand on an 'X' and talk/whisper/yell and your voice echoes. No one knows why this certain spot does this, but it's pretty cool.

City Market - In this market you'll find local musicians, street vendors, and quirky shops. There's also art galleries galore! It was the perfect way to explore the downtown Savannah scene on our last night in the city.

WHAT TO EAT // Olde Pink House - Check out this restaurant to get your southern food fix. It's one of the most popular in all of Savannah, so make reservations. The fried chicken, baked macaroni and cheese, and mashed potatoes were phenomenal. Bonus: The pink stucco and greenery makes for great pictures too.

Sweet Potatoes - This spot isn't walking distance from the historic district, but again, more than worth the drive. If you're looking for really good authentic soul food, look no further. Must try's: Pot roast, fresh fried catfish, and sweet potatoes (obviously!)

Leopold’s - There seemed to be a pretty long line every time we passed this ice cream parlor, but the staff kept it moving quickly. They even supply ice water while you wait outside in the sun. My flavor of choice? Caramel Swirl! Leopold's definitely lived up to its hype.

Our weekend trip was so much fun! I definitely think Savannah (and the South in general) is so underrated. I can't wait to go back soon.
